I'm so sorry about your back issue, Paula. We have some ideas for you so that you can continue to grow your practice with modifications. Mountain and child's pose are great alternatives for forward fold. Go to mountain when the forward folds are quick in a practice and if the forward folds are long, go to a pose that promotes calming and turning inward - like child's pose. Another option is to bow the head with hands in namaste while in mountain when the forward folds are cued, like a mini mini forward fold with the head. Wishing you well as you explore and continue to grow your practice!
